Frequently asked questions
Why should I trust you?
At Super Performance, I combine 15 years of corporate test prep expertise at Kaplan with the personalized care of a parent who has gone through the process.
I thoroughly understand the "Kaplan Method" and I have made changes and enhancements to it. At Super Performance, I don't just teach math and English; I provide a customized 3-phase roadmap—Foundation, Strategy, and Testing—to ensure your child has the concepts, the efficiency, and the psychological fitness to reach their target score.
My Methodology has been proven time and time again when a recent student improved from 1190 to 1490 (a 300-point increase), leading to an admission at the University of Chicago. Another example is my own daughter who scored 1510 in her first attempt at SAT.
If this is not enough for you, let me share a little secret: I have also personally coached the grandchildren of dignitaries like Li Ka-shing and Stanley Ho. (please don't broadcast this!)
Is the Digital SAT harder for foreign students?
This is what most people believe, but I don't think so. The vocabulary has actually become easier, not harder.
The new format is shorter but more intense. What that means is that we have to adjust our strategies. The adaptive nature means the "Hard" module is designed to trip up high-achievers. Our 3-Phase Roadmap is specifically designed to build the Psychological Fitness (Phase 3) required to handle the pressure of the adaptive algorithm so that the students will find enough time to finish the whole test and not get tripped up along the way.
What is a realistic score improvement for SAT?
While every student is different, our methodology is proven to improve scores dramatically.
We recently helped a student jump from 1190 to 1490 (a 300-point increase), leading to an admission at the University of Chicago.
But what is important to note is that this is not done in one step. That's why we prepare a personalized roadmap for each student to hit his score goal.
Why do you want to leave Kaplan and go into business on your own?
As with all these decisions, there are always push and pull factors.
The push factor is that Kaplan is shutting down their test prep operations in Hong Kong.
The pull factor is that I can provide better customer service and more financial benefits for my customers without going through Kaplan as a middleman. The rates that I am charging now is at least 20 to 30% lower than that of Kaplan's, but the customer service experience and personal attention are much better.
Do you offer any score guarantees?
The scores that students can achieve depend on many variables. Excluding external factors, there are factors on my side and factors on the student's side. I do not control all these factors. But for the factors that I can control, I can guarantee that I will deliver.
Furthermore, we should all know that score guarantee is not something that we should believe in. Most of them are just sales gimmicks. Please refer to my blog on "Are Test Prep Companies Doomed?"
What other guarantees do you offer?
We offer a "Satisfaction Guaranteed, Or Your Money Back" guarantee. That means if you are not satisfied with our service at any point in time, we would be happy to refund the remaining lessons to you.
Why are your charges so high?
I am an independent freelancer who has worked for Kaplan for more than 15 years. My charges are in accordance with that of the industry but lower than the charges of Kaplan by 20 to 30% because I have lower overhead costs.
My current charges for one-to-one private tuition is the same as what you get from a Kaplan class (not one-to-one) several years ago.
Please refer to the Kaplan brochure attached.
Can I cancel my booking after I have paid?
Sorry, there is no cancellation after payment. However, you can make changes to the schedule, but the number of changes that you can make has to be no more than half of your number of lessons.
For example, if you have booked for 10 lessons, you are allowed to make at most 5 changes to your schedule.
Having said that, if you are not satisfied with our service at any time, we would be happy to refund the remaining lessons to you.
How many hours of lesson does a student need?
Every student is different and unique. But the ballpark figures are given in the packages that I offer: 16 - 20 hours for the SAT basic concepts and techniques. After that, it's 8 hours of exam drill. The number of hours in exam drill can differ depending on the scores that the students are aiming for.
Do you provide any regular progress reports on the students?
My future plan is to use an AI tool to monitor and customize a student's learning and post the progress on the internet.
Before that can happen, I will hold regular progress sessions after the 3rd, 6th, and 10th lessons. Parents, together with the students, can join in these sessions.
Do you provide any lesson plans?
I have been teaching at various levels (pre-college, diploma, degree, and graduate MBA courses) and in my opinion, lesson plans are for teachers who are relatively inexperienced and need guidance to their work in class.
Having said that, since the SAT is a standardized test, I have prepared a Lesson Outline (attached) that you can use for reference as to what is covered within the lessons. The outline is organized according to my methodology of Concepts, Techniques, and Strategies. Coverage of these items will be more or less sequential.
Do you teach any other test prep lessons?
Over my 15 years at Kaplan, I have also taught IELTS, TOEFL, SSAT, SAT, ACT, GMAT, and GRE.
I will be offering lessons on these other tests after the summer of 2025. In the mean time, these lessons can be arranged on a case-by-case basis.
Other than online Zoom lessons, do you hold in-person lessons?
Since I am working out of Singapore right now, in-person lessons can only be done in Singapore and only in small groups of 2 to 3 students. However, the cost of in-person lessons are the same as online Zoom lessons.
How can I make payment in foreign currency?
Currently, all prices are denominated in HK dollars. If you are living in another country using another currency, you can still make payments to me in HK$ by bank transfers from your local bank in your local currency to my bank account in HK.
The easiest way to do that is through WISE (wise.com). I have used WISE for many years and I found it has reasonable rates and low transaction fees (less than 0.5%).
In the case of foreign currency conversion, I will issue an invoice in your local currency and you just have to transfer the exact amount in your local currency to a WISE account in a local bank. That way, I will absorb the transaction fees and you will get a reasonably good exchange rate.
Do you have a limit to the number of students that you take on?
I think 10 students is the maximum number that I can personally handle at any one time. Other test prep companies accept as many students as possible because they want to maximize their profits, I want to focus on maximizing utility and contributions.
In order to provide personal attention to all of my students, track their progress, and map out improvement plan for each student, ten is the maximum number that I can handle without sacrificing quality and learning experience.
However, in the future, with AI technology and automation, I will be able to accept more students.
My child is already good at Math/English. Why do they need a specialist like you?
Being "good at school" is different from being "good at the SAT." The SAT is a logic and pacing exam. We not only focus on teaching Concepts but also Techniques (efficient methods) and Strategy (question sequencing, pacing, timing) that school curricula don't cover.
We’ve tried other tutors, but the score isn't moving. What's different here at Super Performance?
Most tutors start with practice tests and end with practice tests. They just blindly drill the students and expect improvements over time. Often, they do not analyze the results of each practice test and identify weaknesses.
We start with the Foundation. If a student has a "gap or weakness" in their conceptual understanding (Phase 1), no amount of practice (Phase 2) will fix it. We identify the specific "leaks" in their understanding before we ever start the clock on timing.
